What order should a simple skin routine follow?

Use cleanser, treatment, moisturizer, then sunscreen in the morning. At night, skip sunscreen and add only one new active at a time.

A careful way to test this

Keep the rest of the routine stable, follow current labels, and change one variable at a time. Stop if discomfort is persistent or severe.

What the label can tell you

Check ingredients, directions, warnings, and intended use. Formula and claims can change, so the current package is the source of truth.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct order for a simple skin routine?

Cleanse first, then apply treatments on clean skin, then moisturize, and finish with sunscreen in the morning. Within the treatment step, thinner, water based products generally go before thicker creams, because heavy layers block what is applied over them from reaching the skin evenly.

Should moisturizer go before or after a serum?

After. A serum is a treatment layer meant to sit close to the skin, and moisturizer seals and cushions everything under it. Reversing them means the serum spreads over an occlusive layer and delivers less. At night the same order ends the routine: serum, then moisturizer as the last step.

Where does sunscreen fit in the morning order?

Last, after moisturizer has settled for a few minutes. Sunscreen needs to form an even film on top of the routine, and products applied over it disturb that film and dilute protection. Makeup, if worn, goes over sunscreen, not under it.

How long should I wait between layers?

Only until each layer no longer feels wet, usually a minute or less. Long timed waits are mostly ritual. The exceptions are strong actives on sensitive skin, where applying to fully dry skin reduces stinging, and sunscreen, which benefits from a short settle before makeup or sun exposure.
